What is Reading Owls?

In 2020, Cre8tive Kids amalgamated with Educent, (a Cape Town based company who have been teaching remedial reading skills for the last 38 years) to launch our newly branded Cre8tive Reading Owls programme.

Cre8tive reading Owls is a proven reading skills programme used to improve reading abilities in learners from grades 1 to 12.

Our programme facilitates improvement in:

FLUENCY

WORD RECOGNITION

READING ACCURACY

LISTENING COMPREHENSION

READING COMPREHENSION

READING SPEED

SPELLING

All programmes begin with an initial assessment to determine each learner’s starting ability. Learners will then follow an individual programme aimed at improving their reading and comprehension skills.

Although some activities take place with the use of a computer, many activities are done alongside the guidance of a reading teacher.

Here’s how it works:

All new students participate in a reading skills assessment to determine their current reading level. This will take about an hour with the student, followed immediately by feedback to the parent (about another half hour). If the assessment results determine that we can assist your child and you decide to enrol, you will need to commit to a one-hour session per week at our reading lab in Rondebsoch.

Reading Owls will tailor make and individual reading and comprehension skills programme aimed at specific areas that require improvement for your child.

How long is the programme?

The length of the programme differs for each child and depends largely on their level of reading skills. Remember that learning to read fluently and with confidence takes time and effort. As a general rule we suggest you have an open mind to no less than 34 hours of lesson time.

Sessions take place in the afternoons Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings.

Who would benefit from the Cre8tive Reading Owls programme?

  • Students from grade 1 – 12 who lack the essential reading skills to cope with the demands of school.
  • Students who struggle to read with good comprehension.
  • Students who need to improve their reading skills in order to catch up to a norm for their age.
  • Students who wish to read fast and with better fluency.

For our Junior students in Grade 1 and 2, lessons focus on 5 components of literacy instruction, using fun and lively materials and stories:

  1. Phonemic awareness and the ability to distinguish sounds from one another.
  2. Grade appropriate phonics and sound-spelling relationships.
  3. Vocabulary
  4. Reading fluency
  5. Basic comprehension skills.
